Exploring the Psychodynamics of Addiction and Recovery

From Carl Jung to Bill W: Understanding Addiction Through Archetypes and the Shadow

Featuring David E. Schoen in conversation with Jay Stinnett

Overview

David E. Schoen, author of “The War of the Gods of Addiction,” offers a groundbreaking Jungian perspective on the psychodynamics underlying addiction and the effectiveness of the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Drawing on insights from Jungian psychology, myth, fairy tales, dreams, and clinical experience, Schoen demonstrates how acknowledging and integrating the archetypal shadow is crucial for neutralizing addiction's grip. His analysis bridges the divide between mental health professionals and 12-step communities, encouraging greater mutual understanding and benefit.

David Schoen, LCSW and Jungian analyst, has extensive experience and a strong background as an alcoholism/addiction counselor. He is a senior analyst in the Inter Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, and co-founder and former coordinator of the New Orleans Jungian Training Seminar

Jay Stinnett, AA historian and author, conducts an insightful conversation with Schoen, exploring the correspondence between Carl Jung and Bill Wilson, and the rich interplay between Jungian concepts and the AA approach to recovery.
